IMPORTANCE OF MEDIATION IN THE POST COLD WAR ERA

by Nadia Ahmed

The present world is exposed to a number of conflicts. Mediation is relevant in the post cold war era. It has gained great importance in the post cold war era. Mediation is one of the important concept related to the road to CR. Mediation is the settle meant of disputes through peaceful means. In mediation the third party where states, individual or a group of states are involved to settle the disputes. In mediation the third party itself plays a role and provides good offices for the peaceful settlements.

At the present time there seems to be no end for what might be included under community mediation-including involments in ethnic conflicts neighborhood disputes, small business deals gone sour, tenant-landlord disputes and conflicts within schools. Mediation is only possible when two parties are not ready to talk directly. A buffer is required for this, who is trusted by the two parties.

There has been increase in the number of states and thus more and more problems are arising. First cease-fire is announced between them and then an agreement is signed later on. There are many examples of mediation in the past example Zia_ul_Haq tried to mediate between Iran and Iraq, President Clinton mediated between Israel and Palestine, France had played a role of mediator between America and North South Vietnam.

In the post cold war the mediation gained great importance. In the Middle East, mediation is often part of the process of Conflict Resolution in local communities. A mediator for Middle East disputes is often a community leader who may be well aquatinted with the parties. In Far East mediation is also well established. Mediation is more practical in China than in all the rest of the world. This has continued into the modern period. Mediation in cities are identified by Street Committes. In China, Korea and some other nations of Far East, the mediator is not so much a neutral person who simply tries to serve the individual interests of the parties and help them to resolve the differences.

Mediation is also relevant in the post cold war era. A mediator can be an organization or an individual like Abraham Zaki, Secretary General of SAARC Mediation is only possible when two parties desire. Other mediators include Nelson Mendela Jimmy Carter. The importance of mediation increased to a great extent in the post cold war era because of the doubling of states, so the number of states has increased. When the two parties example Pakistan and India are not ready to talk directly, a buffer state can act as a mediator so as to create peace between them and to settle their disputes.

To conclude we can say that Mediation has played an important role in creating and maintaining peace in the post cold war era.
