The issue of terrorism is becoming the most important ideological, political and social phenomenon at the global level.
Presently, South Asia is in the grip of terrorism. Terrorism does not exist in a vacuum; it is a combination of political and militant expression against the existing ruling political establishment in South Asia. On
the other hand, CBM (Confidence-Building Measures) regime, though not strong enough to confront the terrorist forces, is trying to give an alternative view in order to resolve conflict in a peaceful way.
This paper is an attempt to define terrorism and analyze why it is linked with Muslim religious forces. Moreover, attempt has been made to analyze the roots of religious extremism that are trying to institutionalize
terrorism in the name of Jihad. However, the paper will also try to see is there any possibility to seek a linkage between religious extremism and CBM regime in South Asia.
Finally, the paper will
also analyze the issue of National Missile Defense (NMD) and its status after 11 September. Both the supporters and opponents of NMD claim that the event of 11 September has strengthened their case. Supporters of NMD
also claim that the attack showed that they need to protect themselves against unexpected threats, while opponents point out that the terrorists did not need ballistic missiles- they can carry out terrorist acts by
using knives and box cutters to perpetrate their crime. An attempt has been made in this paper to see the impact of NMD on South Asia with particular reference to terrorism.
