WORKSHOP ON THE CHALLENGE OF CONFIDENCE-BUILDING IN 21ST
CENTURY: PROBLEMS AND PROSPECTS FOR SOUTH ASIA FEBRUARY 23-25, 2001 AT HOTEL REGENT PLAZA, KARACHI OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP The purpose of the workshop is to discuss and analyze various concepts and
approaches regarding Confidence-Building Measures (CBMs) in international and regional perspectives. The fundamental task of the workshop is to see the validity of CBMs in the South Asian region. In order to introduce the concept
of CBMs, a one-semester course has been offered in the postgraduate level at the Department of International Relations, University of Karachi since January 1998. On the one hand, the workshop is an attempt to reach those who do not
understand the rationale of CBMs and have strong reservations about that concept, whereas, on the other hand, the workshop aims to examine the cogency of the CBMs from various perspectives. Following are the objectives of the workshop:-

To analyze the concept of CBMs and to lessen the gap between theory and practice.

To see the role of institutions in building and promoting the concept of CBMs.

To promote basic understanding and thinking about the role and relevance of CBMs in managing and resolving conflicts in South Asia

To encourage networking among different institutions and strengthen CBMs community in South Asia
-
To analyze the process of CBMs from perspective of small states.

To examine the nuclear deterrence in South Asia with particular reference to CBMs.

To analyze the role of violence and the process of CBMs.
-
To see the non-traditional approach regarding civil society and the role of CBMs.

To analyze the process of Track Two diplomacy in South Asia.
-
To see the process of CBMs in future perspective.
The workshop will try to discuss all these issues rationally and objectively and hope that it will contribute and add some new thinking in the field of CBMs and Conflict Resolution. Workshop Main Page |
